Bache felt himself being lifted up from behind. The sounds of shouting and screaming were muffled and clouds of grey dust made it difficult to see.

He coughed and squinted at the blurry figure pulling him out of the drainage culvert he’d rolled into, hidden in the middle of the road’s central flower border. There was a fire nearby. He could feel the heat on one side of his face and instinctively turned away from it.

‘Come on, Loftt,’ said a raspy voice he thought he knew, but couldn’t quite place. ‘It’s a bit warm here.’

An arm snaked under his armpits and pulled him sideways away from the fire.

‘Zaphir,’ he croaked.

‘She’s over here,’ said the same male voice, coughing and spitting out the dust.

Bache realised it was Nexen and allowed himself to be steered towards the corner of the road.

‘Anything broken?’ Nexen asked, leaning Bache against a section of wall.

‘Don’t think so,’ he said, checking himself over.

‘Bache, is that you?’ asked Zaphir, staggering over and peering at him through dust-encrusted eyes.

‘Most of me, I think,’ he said. ‘How about you?’

‘Bruised all over, but otherwise intact. Have you seen the policeman?’

‘He didn’t make it,’ said Nexen. ‘He was last out and got caught by those glass doors.’

The ringing in Bache’s ears was receding and being replaced by sirens echoing from all directions. He wiped his eyes and peered over at the fire still raging in the houses on the opposite side of the road.

‘Was that the flyer?’ he asked.

Nexen nodded.

Bache turned to look where the police vehicle had been parked. The front of the building had collapsed down onto it; only a back corner of it was visible.

‘We need some transport,’ he said, then looking at the other two and down at himself, he grimaced. ‘And perhaps somewhere to get a shower and some new clothes.’

Just as the first responders began to arrive, the three of them joined a few other dust-covered pedestrians and sidled off towards the city centre before too many questions were asked. A water fountain in a small park just around the corner allowed them to wash their hands and faces. After they brushed each other down, they didn’t look quite as frightful and carried on walking until they found a large hotel.

Nexen contacted Dion from the lobby. She quickly agreed to provide some funds and they were able to secure two interconnecting rooms and some fresh clothes from a store opposite the hotel.
